American Graduate is Combating Dropouts!

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), in partnership with America's Promise Alliance and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has launched American Graduate: Let's Make It Happen — an initiative to help combat the dropout crisis in this country.

Local public radio and television stations, located in 20 impacted "hub markets" where the dropout crisis is most acute, are at the core of the American Graduate initiative. They will work directly with students, parents, teachers, mentors, volunteers and leaders to develop strategies tailored to local conditions to lower the dropout rate in their respective communities. Stations will create content that addresses the issue and create community-based projects that make school more personalized and relevant for students, engage parents, and develop and support effective teachers.

For more info, please visit American Graduate.

NPR: The National Teachers Initiative

"I think there is no higher calling than being a public school teacher in this country," StoryCorps founder Dave Isay tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Audie Cornish.

"Teachers are feeling under attack and underappreciated," Isay says. "We want to do our part over the next year to turn that around."

StoryCorps, the American oral history project on NPR, is conducting a new project for the academic year called the National Teachers Initiative, to feature conversations with teachers across the country — teachers talking to each other, students interviewing the teachers who changed their lives, and more. To read their stories, please visit NPR.

Contributing to Teacher Effectiveness With The Desk

"Effective teaching is rooted in effective planning and, unfortunately, many teachers feel alone in the world of planning. This reality presents an opportunity to innovate the lesson planning system. Four Teachers Project is taking advantage of this opportunity by proposing a web-based application known as The Desk to create a community of teachers with access to planning tools, idea sharing, peer editing, and much more. With The Desk, teachers no longer have to feel alone. They will have access to great ideas and tons of creativity. With this kind of support, teachers around the nation would be planning more effective lesson plans and consequently reaching more children than ever before.." Read More
